SVdP’s mattress recycling facility in Eugene accepts up to ten mattresses per household for recycling

EUGENE — St. Vincent de Paul Lane County (SVdP) the nation’s first and oldest mattress recycling organization is expanding its operations in Oregon thanks to a new state law.

Since the first of this year, SVdP has been accepting up to ten mattresses or box springs per household at their facility on 1770 Prairie Rd in Eugene, OR, for free mattress recycling. This is due in part to a new state stewardship law (Senate Bill 1576) which took effect on January 1, 2025, which allows for free mattress recycling for households across Oregon.

Previously, St. Vincent de Paul through a partnership with Waste Wise Lane County could only accept mattresses through the local waste transfer stations which charged a fee at drop-off for recycling. Now, individuals can drop off ten or less mattresses at the Prairie Road facility, Monday through Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. or they can bring them to the Glenwood Waste Transfer Station on weekends and still have them recycled by SVdP for free.

“For close to 25 years, mattress recycling has been at the heart of St. Vinnie’s environmental mission. Mattress stewardship legislation will help us transform consumer’s discarded mattresses into an economic and environmental opportunity for our region. We’re excited to ramp up our recycling efforts – this will bring a cascade of benefits to the community, including increasing Oregon’s recycling rates, diverting a burdensome waste product from landfills, and creating meaningful job opportunities for people with barriers to employment,” says SVdP Executive Director Bethany Cartledge.

St. Vincent de Paul has been recycling mattresses since the 1990’s when there was no viable mattress recycling program in the United States. St. Vincent de Paul currently operates three mattress recycling facilities in Oregon and California and recycles more than 400,000 mattresses every single year.
