SVdP seeks to buy HOPE manufactured homes for agency’s manufactured home parks
EUGENE — St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County (SVdP) and nonprofit partner HOPE Community Corporation are teaming up to replace 36 units of aging housing stock in SVdP owned and operated manufactured home parks with HOPE homes.
HOPE Community Corporation was founded in 2022 by Terry McDonald and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County with $15 million in funding from the state of Oregon. The HOPE manufactured housing factory was built from the renovated remains of the Old American Steel Facility at 888 Garfield. Earlier this year, HOPE achieved HUD certification for its factory and began producing single-wide manufactured homes for households in Oregon. Production of double-wide units is set to begin in 2025. Currently, HOPE employs 30 people and is rapidly expanding. Over the next two years, HOPE plans to create more than 100 jobs for skilled trade workers and offer apprenticeship opportunities for students entering the workforce. The organization will continue its successful partnership with LESD, providing the Hope Factory experience where senior high school students work alongside craft professionals in trades such as welding, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and manufacturing. HOPE is also dedicated to offering employment opportunities to individuals seeking a second chance.
“HOPE is thrilled to have a strong partnership with St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) to address the urgent need for affordable housing in our community. Together, we are committed to filling 36 park spaces with single-wide manufactured homes, providing high-quality housing for low-income individuals. With HOPE achieving full HUD certification and producing homes weekly, this collaboration allows us to make a significant impact in increasing the available housing inventory in the community within a shorter period compared to long-term housing projects.” Says HOPE Managing Director Lisa Hartwick.
HOPE’s 728 square foot single-wide Sunstone model currently retails for $70,000 and is eligible for purchase by a qualified buyer who is at or below 80% of the area median income. As a HUD recognized affordable housing provider, St. Vincent de Paul qualifies as an eligible buying agency.
SVdP is currently working with HOPE to purchase 36 of the single-wide models to both fill empty lots and replace aging housing stock in agency operated manufactured home parks across Oregon. Two units have already been purchased. One is designated for a lot at SVdP’s Arbor Park in Portland while the other is set to be installed at the Tivoli Park in Junction City.
“SVdP is excited to bring energy-efficient, affordable housing to our local community. HOPE homes are a vital part of the solution to the housing crisis for Oregonian’s who have been priced out of the traditional housing market. Our partnership with HOPE Community Corporation will help us realize our dreams to provide as many of these high-quality manufactured homes as possible to low-income families, seniors and other community members struggling to find housing. We know increasing housing opportunities is a key piece in our efforts to address homelessness.”-Bethany Cartledge, SVdP Executive Director.
St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County is calling for community donations to help fund the purchase of these amazing units to continue our mission of making affordable housing accessible for as many as possible!
