House No. 5 makes its way across the Lane County Fairgrounds.

Six hours in a car will get you out of Oregon. Six hours on a plane will get you out of the country. Six hours with Ram Jack of Oregon will get a house across the Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene, Oregon. For those not accustomed to seeing a house rolling by on a Sunday morning, that's what occurred during the last weekend of June 2013. The spectacle was the first leg of a journey that will culminate in a handoff of keys to a veteran family.

Now poised on blocks at 1320 Jefferson St., the house is the fifth for the Veterans' Housing Project (VHP), a coalition of local government, utilities, nonprofits, businesses, and volunteers who acquire and rehabilitate homes for the families of veterans returning from active duty. The goal is to provide a comfortable, affordable home to ease financial stress for up to two years as the veteran gets reacquainted with family and reintegrated into the community.

VHP's House No. 5 is the biggest undertaking yet. Originally located at 13th Ave. and Tyler St., it was purchased by Lane County to make way for Fairgrounds expansion then donated to St. Vincent de Paul, fiscal agent for VHP. It will be a challenging project that got an initial boost from The Home Depot Foundation, which has provided a $75,000 grant toward the rehabilitation of this and four more homes.

The VHP is ready to go to work, but first House No. 5 had to be moved. Come along for the early morning ride! Watch the slideshow below.
