Buying a turkey decal at a St. Vinnie's retail thrift store is a practical way to help hungry neighbors

What'll be on your holiday table? Chances are you don't have to think twice about turkey or ham and all the trimmings -- you just go out and buy it, or you visit relatives who may not worry about filling their table either.

Not so for a growing number of families who use their resources to stay housed, or barely housed, and worry about food later. For them it's not just a matter of the holiday meal, but of feeding the household, often school-age kids, for the entire winter break without benefit of free or reduced-price meals at school.

St. Vincent de Paul endeavors to fill the void by providing a holiday food box that meets the requirements of tradition plus holds enough nutrious, protein-rich foods to last into the new year. Each box comes complete with a frozen turkey or ham. Last year, a record 3,500 food boxes were distributed from Eugene-Springfield Catholic Churches or the Lindholm Center.

To receive a Holiday Food Box sign up in person at our Social Service Office in the Lindholm Service Center, 456 Hwy 99/at Elmira Rd., Eugene. You will receive a ticket to present at your assigned pick-up location.

Here are the elements of the Holiday Food Box effort:

• Turkey decals, purchased for $1 each in St. Vinnie's retail stores in conjunction with the opportunity to "round up" purchases to the nearest dollar. Our customers can save on gifts and help those in need in the same transaction.

• Turkey Drive -- Freezers are placed at particating locations to accept donations of frozen turkeys and hams. Our partners include faith communities and St. Vinnie's retail stores, but if you have a setting that would lend itself to filling a freezer, we're all ears! Call Ashely Hensley at 541-743-7147 or contact Ashely by email.

• Food-Drive Barrels -- Look for collection barrels in St. Vincent de Paul stores and at other partnering businesses. Each has a list of suggested canned/non-perishable items that make good additions to food boxes.

• Turkey Trot -- This Thanksgiving-morning walk-run raises funds for FOOD for Lane County. If you're not a participant you can volunteer in any one of several capacities.

• Money accepted! Monetary donations are welcome by mail to "Holiday Food" c/o SVDP, P.O. Box 24608, Eugene, OR 97402; or donate online.
