First Place Kids Center
Dear Community Members,
It is with great regret that we will be closing the First Place Kids Center on June 1. First Place itself will stay open and continue to provide vital services to families with children who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. However, due to cuts in private and government funding, we are no longer able to sustain the therapeutic pre-school that served dozens of children every year.
A recent article in the Eugene Register-Guard generated a lot of phone calls and emails about the closing. Although many people offered to make a financial contribution to help keep the center open, the gap in the budget is close to $150,000. It seems imprudent, at a time when the community has so many other pressing social service needs, to attempt a new fundraising campaign of this size. St. Vincent de Paul will continue to offer services to children, and we will continue to look for ways to make the Kids Center financially viable again. We welcome your feedback.
Thank you very much for your interest in the program. It's the care and compassion of people like you who make Lane County such a great place to live. We encourage you to learn more about our other programs designed to help families with children in our community and what you can do to help them succeed.
