A Mother’s Day Gift Idea

As Mother’s Day approaches, you may be asking yourself, “How can I tell my mom (or grandma, or other important lady in my life) how much she means to me?”

Here’s one idea.  Every day in our community, there are mothers struggling to meet their childrens’ basic needs due to lay-offs, sudden illness, and circumstances beyond their control.  We recently met a lovely young lady with red hair who was looking for a food box at the Atkinson Food Room.  When we gently asked if she would mind telling her story, she started crying.  “I’m sorry,” she said.  “I’m too emotional.”

It makes us sorry, too, because we meet people like her nearly every day.  The good news is there’s something everyone can do to help mothers like her.  Every year St. Vincent de Paul’s Social Service Office provides emergency assistance to over 60,000 people.  The food, clothing, household goods, rent and utility assistance, and prescription medication vouchers we give away are a huge gift to families struggling to get by.

Mothers love unconditionally and give unselfishly.  Reaching out and helping others is a perfect way to honor the woman who gave you life.  Your tax-deductible contribution of any size will make a big difference in people’s lives – and a long way toward emulating mom’s kind nature.  Read Becky’s story or Rosalie’s story to learn more about the mothers (and fathers and children) your donation will help.

If you are making a gift in honor of Mother's Day, please write "Mother's Day" in the memo line and provide a name and address for your mom (or other special lady in your life). We will send a special card to honor your donation. Thank you for giving!
